PIP Insurance In Florida

Navigating insurance requirements in Florida can be complex, as the minimums vary significantly depending on the type of insurance and your specific circumstances. Here’s a breakdown of the key minimum requirements for different lines of insurance in Florida.

1. Auto Insurance
Florida is a «no-fault» state, which means your own insurance company pays for your injuries in an accident, regardless of who is at fault. This has a direct impact on the minimum required coverage.

For any four-wheeled vehicle with a current Florida registration, you must have the following continuous coverage:

$10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This is the core of Florida’s no-fault system. It covers 80% of your medical bills and 60% of your lost wages, up to $10,000, after an accident, regardless of who caused it.

$10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL): This coverage pays for damage you cause to another person’s property, such as their vehicle, a fence, or a guardrail.

Important Note on Bodily Injury Liability (BIL): Unlike most states, Florida does not legally require Bodily Injury Liability insurance. This coverage pays for injuries you cause to others. However, if you are convicted of a DUI, you will be required to carry BIL for a period of time. Even without a DUI, most insurance experts and financial advisors strongly recommend carrying BIL, as the $10,000 PIP limit is often insufficient for serious injuries.
